Description of the product

The stone fruits of the cashew tree, which grows up to 12 meters tall and belongs to the sumach family, are cashew nuts (Anacardiaceae).

Cashews are a type of fruit with a shell (nut types). Because of their similar qualities in terms of transportation, notably their high oil content, their storage and transportation needs are similar to those of oil-bearing seeds/fruits.

The following are the several types of cashew nuts:

1. Apple with cashews

The pear-shaped, swelling, soft, glossy yellow or red, fleshy stem of the cashew nut proper, measuring up to 9 cm in length, is known as the cashew apple. The cashew apple is not appropriate for transportation or storage on its own. Cashew Kernels.

The cashew nut is a stone fruit that grows from the bottom of the cashew apple. It is about 2 – 2.5 cm long, kidney-shaped, yellowish-reddish in color, and has a firm shell with a solitary kernel that has a subtle aroma. After harvesting, it is removed from the cashew apple and sun- or hot-air dried, with the shell becoming dislodged to reveal the kernel proper.

The cashew kernel is number three.

A fine, brown seed coat surrounds the kernel, which contains antioxidants that protect it from ambient oxygen penetration, preventing it from going rancid (oxidative rancidity).

Anacardium nuts are another name for cashew nuts.

The amount of oil in the product is between 45 and 50 percent.

Storage quality vs. storage time

The shell contains a high concentration of poisonous CNSL (Cashew Nut Shell Liquid), which is utilized in paints and brake linings and functions as a protective jacket, extending the raw product’s storage life to years [2].

It is critical for the surveyor to determine the year of harvest: it must be considered that the nuts may have been mixed with those from the previous year’s crop. When establishing whether or not there has been a loss in transportation, this possibility should not be overlooked. Nuts from the previous year’s harvest are more likely to be infested by beetles and become rancid.
